THADDEUS STEVENS SCHOOL
Academic Welcome Center
Washington DC
Built in 1868, Thaddeus Stevens School was the first school built in D.C. for freed African American slaves. Inspired by this rich history, we created an homage to the community through transferring historic photos on to ceramic tiles. Each mosaic flower is centered with a historic photo and surrounded by the names of important community members of the past who contributed to the preservation and greatness of the school throughout the many decades. Because the commission is located in the Academic Welcome Center for elementary aged children, we kept the theme whimsical and bright with our flower and bird theme. It was an honor to have been awarded this very special commission!
Mixed media of ceramic tile, glass, mirror and paint.
